Valterfi’s Journey from Fortaleza to Vancouver
In our latest employee spotlight, we’re thrilled to share the inspiring story of Valterfi, one of our dedicated backend developers at Aequilibrium. Valterfi’s journey from Brazil to Canada is a testament to his passion for soccer and technology, and his experiences reflect a story of perseverance, adaptation, and success.
A Passion for Soccer and a New Beginning
Valterfi’s love for soccer runs deep. From Fortaleza, Brazil, he’s a passionate supporter of Sport Club Corinthians Paulista and has always been immersed in the vibrant world of football. The thrill of the World Cup and national leagues fueled his passion for the sport, but his ambitions extended beyond the soccer field.
In 2019, Valterfi embarked on a new adventure: studying in Canada. His decision was motivated by a desire to explore new opportunities and challenges in a different environment. Enrolling in a program that allowed him to study for one year and then gain work experience for another year, Valterfi set his sights on Vancouver, a city known for its diverse culture and beautiful landscapes.
Finding His Place at Aequilibrium
After his first year of studies, Valterfi began searching for a job in Vancouver and was fortunate to secure a position at Aequilibrium. This October marks his fourth anniversary with the company, a milestone that reflects his significant contributions and growth.
At Aequilibrium, Valterfi has had the chance to work on projects with high-profile clients, tackling complex challenges and making a tangible impact in the Canadian market. His role as a backend developer has allowed him to embrace the work’s technical and collaborative aspects.
Embracing Vancouver and Overcoming Challenges
Adapting to life in Vancouver came with its own set of challenges. Valterfi quickly learned to navigate the city’s weather, which is famously rainy and cold but offers stunning summers that he has come to cherish. Enjoying outdoor activities and exploring local parks became a favourite pastime, contrasting to the more temperamental climate.
The migration process was well-supported, thanks to Aequilibrium’s commitment to assisting with documentation and work permits. Valterfi’s transition from a study permit to a work permit and eventually to Permanent Residency (PR) was facilitated through the BC Provincial Nomination Program, a process made smoother by the company’s proactive support.

Valterfi’s journey was not without its hurdles, particularly as he began his role during the pandemic. Despite the challenges, Aequilibrium went above and beyond to ensure employee well-being. The company maintained connections through virtual meetings and engaged in activities like park meet-ups and happy hours, focusing on mental health and fostering a sense of community.
“The support I received from Aequilibrium during the pandemic was incredible,” Valterfi shares. “They genuinely cared about our well-being and ensured we felt connected, even when working remotely. It was heartening to see a company that prioritizes mental health and personal happiness.”
